1000 'County' class introduction
As the 'Kings' were the final development of the 'Star' class, so the 'Counties' were the ultimate evolution of the 'Saint' locomotives within the 20 tons axle limit. It was said that F. W. Hawksworth, who designed the 'County' locomotives, intended the class to be an evolution of the 'Hall' class with 4 row superheaters. Instead, a new boiler was created, number 15, together with other new concepts for the Great Western including 6 feet 3 inch coupled wheel diameter, 280 pounds per square inch boiler pressure and a continuous splasher over the driving wheels. Initially the class would be numbered from 9900 but this was altered before assembly of the first locomotive. The power classification of the 'County' class was 6-MT, the G.W.R. power class was D and the route availability was RED.

5 INCH GAUGE 0-6-0 40 Brighton Stroudley Terrier Newport (Known as The Boxhill By Martin Evans)
his is an Exceptionally well engineered tank Engine - Hand Pump, Injector, Oil Mechanical Lubricator, Brakes with wooden brake shoes. There's an additional fitting on the Rear Bunker which allows you to attach a tener or wagon to feed the loco with water. Also, there are 2 water side tanks and a rear tank.
History: The London, Brighton and South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) A1 Class is a class of 0-6-0T steam locomotive generally known as Terriers. Designed by William Stroudley, 50 were built in 1872 and 1874-1880. They were designed for hauling commuter trains, mainly in South London and East London (including through Marc Isambard Brunel's Thames Tunnel), but were soon made obsolete and put on other work, often finding use on branch line passenger and freight workings and as shunting engines. Between 1911 and 1913, 12 were reboilered, with another four following suit after the Great War; these engines forming the A1X Class. Many however were withdrawn between 1898-1920.
Fifteen of the class entered British Railways stock in 1948, and BR
gave them the power classification 0P. They lasted longer than most
classes of pre-grouping tank engine due to the presence of several light
railways in the Southern Region's jurisdiction. 40 Brighton (preserved
at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway as W11 Newport )

For many years, Britannia had her cab roof painted white. This was to commemorate her pulling the funeral train of King George VI from Norfolk to London following his death in February 1952 at Sandringham House, Norfolk.
Britannia was retired in 1966, after 15 years of service. Initially destined for the National Railway Museum because of her cultural significance, Britannia was eventually bought by the Britannia Locomotive Company Limited.

History
The Gresley P2 Passenger 2-8-2
![]()
The P2s were designed to handle the express passenger traffic on the Edinburgh to Aberdeen main line, which is noted for its steep gradients and tight curves. Double-headed Pacifics were prohibited from the line, so the heaviest traffic was usually handled by double-heading two smaller engines. Gresley sought to overcome this need with a Mikado (2-8-2) design with four driving axles for greater adhesion compared to an A3 Pacific. Initial plans were drawn up in 1932, and consisted of a 2-8-2 Mikado design using an A3-type boiler and dual chimney. Whilst the design was still being finalised, two engines were authorised in February 1933. At the end of March, this initial order was reduced to one locomotive. The firebox was lengthened, and a double blastpipe was added. The Kylchap chimney/blastpipe arrangement was chosen, along with an ACFI feed water heater.
The P2’s were designed by H.N. Gresley to eliminate the double heading of express passenger services over the heavy gradients of the Edinburgh to Aberdeen main line. Cock o' the North was built with Lentz rotary cam poppet valves, ACFI feedwater heater and Kylchap double blastpipe and chimney.

This famous class of locomotives was developed from John Ramsbottom's
2-4-0 'Newton' class which dated back to 1866. Mr. F.W.Webb took over
as Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London & North Western Railway
in 1871 and from 1874 he built a further 20 locomotives in the same
style as the Newton class but with modifications including higher boiler
pressure. The first member of this new class was No. 2175 'Precedent'.
From 1877 until 1882 a further 76 locos were added giving a class total
of 166. However from 1887 to 1902 all 166 members of the Precedent
class were renewed or rebuilt at Crewe Works as virtually brand new
locomotives.
These remarkable machines were hard workers and earned the name 'Jumbos' - the English pet name for an elephant. The Jumbos were powerful, surefooted and reliable just like an elephant. But unlike the elephant the L&NWR Jumbos were very fast indeed! For this reasons the Jumbos were selected for the famous railway rivalry that broke out for the second time in 1895. The so-called 'Race to the North' was competed between the East Coast and West Coast groups of railway companies between London and Aberdeen - a distance of more than 520 miles. The L&NWR was a key player in the West Coast consortium and their Precedent class locomotives were regular performers on the route from London to Crewe and Crewe to Carlisle.

It was Barton Wright who introduced the well-known black loco livery, lined in red and white (red only for goods engines), in 1880, which endured to the end of the company's existence. However, in 1886 he tendered his resignation, apparently simply because he wished to move to London. His work had a profound effect on the company, and included the instigation of the new Horwich works, the L&Y's main locomotive production facility to replace the ageing and inadequate Miles Platting works. His successor, and the man who completed the rise of the company into the realm of those whose locos were worthy of note and was responsible for the great success of Horwich, was John (later Sir John) Aspinall.
Aspinall consolidates
Aspinall continued to improve the loco stock of the company, introducing
his own, more powerful 0-6-0 and 4-4-0 designs, but his first contribution,
and the most well-known, was the 2-4-2T loco he introduced to replace
the 0-4-4T's which he thought were unbalanced and had too little water
capacity. The 2-4-2's eventually numbered 330, the biggest single class
of the type in the country, and, in their Belpaire-boilered superheated
version, capable of handling all but the heaviest expresses. Here is
a standard, round-topped unsuperheated example, in lined black but
as yet unlettered.

Made by ex Horwich works Employee.
Thompson initially
worked on producing a mixed-traffic
Pacific, before working on a new express passenger design. With the
intention of improving the A4 design, Thompson drew
up two modified Gresley 3-cylinder
designs. These designs discarded the conjugated gear and had separate
sets of Walschaerts valve gear for each cylinder. Due to space restrictions,
the middle cylinder could not be parallel with the outside cylinders.
One design had the middle cylinder forward of the outside cylinders, whilst
the chosen design had the middle cylinder further back. Both designs used A4 boilers.
A1 (by then
reclassified A10) No.
4470 Great Northern was selected for rebuilding. It
is unfortunate that Great Northern (the very first Gresley Pacific)
was chosen for this rebuilding, rather than being selected for future
preservation. There has been much debate on the reason for this choice.
Some state it as bad luck, whilst others clearly blame Thompson for
letting his personal feelings towards Gresley to
cloud his judgement. It is known that the Chief Draughtsman and a
number of high up officials within the LNER unsuccessfully tried
to deter Thompson from
rebuilding this engine.

many of the class received superheater boilers with extended smoke boxes
and their performance was then indistinguishable from the “George

and so were different in appearance. They were the first of Whale’s
larger engines and the last one was not scrapped until 1949.

L.N.E.R V1 2.6.2 TANK LOCOMOTIVE
A series of 2-6-2T tank engines was first proposed in 1928 to work the Metropolitan City Widened Lines. The initial drawings featured condensing gear and a short chimney for this work. By late 1928, these features had been discarded. The design was based on the Gresley K1 and incorporated the same boiler. However, Gresley used three cylinders with his conjugated valve gear for the central cylinder. By December 1928, it was decided that the first locomotives would enter service in Scotland. The design continued to evolve, and by April 1929 the K1 boiler had been replaced by a modified D34 Glen boiler. A total of 82 V1s were built between 1930 and 1939 in a total of five batches, although many of the early batches were delayed due to financial constraints. . Nearly 80 of the V-1s were still running about at Nationalisation.
This is a very well-made engine 3 cylinder V1 Tank locomotive, made by a model engineer from Scotland which goes very well. where it has regularly performed well on both club running and public hauling days. A large, powerful engine, it is easy to drive with a good turn of speed. Made to Martin Evan's "Enterprise" design, it has been built as a 3 cylinder engine, with Nigel Gresley conjugated valve gear of the originals. I've driven two cylinder versions - but you can tell you have the the extra cylinder to haul big loads. The motion is nicely made fluted as you would expect, two Injectors no water axle pump, two Oil lubricators one on each running plate.
Professionally made Silver-soldered copper boiler from Bishop Ellis with Radiant super heaters, twin injectors and axle pump. Twin safety valves. Cab fitted with pressure gauge and hand made back head fittins, water gauge with blowdown, injector steam and water valves, blower valve, whistle and push-pull twin regulator. Hand brake but no steam cylinder for the brakes, everything there to connect if you decide to make a brake cylinder. Have previous boiler Certificates hydraulic and steam tests from the owner, currently 4 year hydraulic Test but requires Steam test by your Boiler Inspector, Southern Federation Certificate . Have previous History. Weight approx 172 pounds

This engine has been built to very high standards a few of the components where purchased from Winson some years ago to expedite building of the model. The chassis is completely finished painted and running on compressed air. The locomotive has been built to the Les Warnett design and was never intended to be a Winson prototype many details have been added including oil feed passages direct to all journals and bearings. Cast iron cylinders stretchers and other major components have been purchased from Norman Spinks including all the wheels both on engine and tender. The boiler was supplied by Cheddar boilers and incorporates a combustion chamber and radiant superheated fabricated in stainless steel both are immaculately manufactured. The engine is 80% complete and needs very little work to finish the project, all the remaining castings and fittings and boiler fittings are supplied with the locomotive including a full set of drawings Norman Spinks.
